Questions about business loans

Which loan, and how much

A working capital loan covers short-term needs such as stock, materials or payroll, and is usually repaid within a year or two. A business loan is a lump sum for a larger, longer-lived purchase, repaid over a term matched to what you have bought. If you are not sure, tell us what the money is for and we will suggest the structure.

It depends on the structure. Working capital loans are shorter term and sized around the gap you're funding. Business loans run longer, with the term matched to what you're buying. Government-backed lending under the Growth Guarantee Scheme is capped at £2m per business group, with terms up to six years.

Yes. Government-backed term lending is provided by Allica Bank as an accredited lender under the British Business Bank's Growth Guarantee Scheme.

Yes, and many customers do. One relationship, one underwriting process, and no second funder to manage. Amber Labs runs a working capital loan alongside an invoice finance facility.

Days rather than weeks. A short call, our standard credit assessment, then a written offer setting out the rate, the term and the monthly repayment.

Security, liability and process

No. The government guarantees 70% of the outstanding balance to the lender, which is what allows lending to businesses without conventional security. Your business remains 100% liable for repaying the loan in full. What the scheme does protect is your home, because a lender cannot take your principal private residence as security.

We generally take a personal guarantee for a business loan. Under the Growth Guarantee Scheme, a lender cannot take your principal private residence as security.

Yes, we generally take a personal guarantee for a business loan.

Just a few months of bank statements, plus a clear picture of what the money is for and your desired repayment term. In some cases for larger loans, we'll request management accounts and statutory accounts.

We'll tell you why. And if we can't help, we'll do our best to refer you to a trusted partner who can, no strings attached.
