I knew I needed to make a change to feel fulfilled and that Fintech would be the right fit. I still get to work in finance but in an agile and exciting way.

PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF AND TELL US ABOUT YOUR ROLE.

I’m a senior software engineer working in our CID (confidential invoice discounting) squad here at MarketInvoice. My expertise lie within C# and backend development. I’ve only been here for a few weeks but I’m settling in well and have been welcomed with open arms.

WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO MOVE FROM CORPORATE BANKING TO FINTECH?

I don’t want to sound cliché but I wanted to make an impact within my day-to-day role. Coming from a corporate bank, I felt a little frustrated that I could never see if and how I had improved in both my personal development and my work.

Working on old school tech and not being cloud migrated meant that our processes and flexibility for change were extremely limited. There are obviously pros to working at a bank but, for me, I felt like a cog in a machine. I knew I needed to make a change to feel more fulfilled.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT WORKING AT MARKETINVOICE?

The flexibility and opportunities for personal growth. I love that I have come in and learnt so much already. I’m currently working on our CID solution and I’ve already seen the impact on what we do as engineers here.

I must say though that the best bit is definitely the culture. It’s great! For instance, I’m sitting in our Glass Box right now and there are a group of people playing ping-pong behind me. We have an extremely social environment but we also get stuff done in innovative and engaging ways.

Did you have any preconceptions about working at a Fintech, if so what? No, not really. I always knew that joining a Fintech was the right fit for me – although I didn’t realise how great it would be until I joined. I love how agile we are. I still get to work on finance but in an exciting way.

TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT WORKING AT A FINTECH THAT PEOPLE MIGHT NOT EXPECT.

Most people would expect the Tech team to be pretty isolated from the rest of the organisation, particularly Sales. But at MarketInvoice, we use a tribe and squad approach which means working in cross-functional teams. This allows key decision making to come from every area of the business, giving me the opportunity to work with people from Marketing, Sales, Operations and so forth.

It’s a great way to work and gives you a real sense of ownership over a certain project. Plus, I still get to work with people in Tech (my squad) too.
